We are going in for a post operation visit to the pediatricain today. Nephi is doing really well. He caught a cold but other than that we are 1 month past the surgery and doing fine.
I read up a little about heart transplants because that will probably be in Nephi's future and because people keep asking about it. I didn't realize just how scary a transplant could be. You have to have 6 to 12 months to live before being put on the transplant list. The oldest transplant is 24 years and transplants lasting 1 yr is 90% 5 yrs is 70% and 10 yrs is 50%. The posibility of developing cancer due to the imunosupressing drugs is very high. They have to biopsy the heart every 6 months to a year. Sometimes they leave your original heart inside with the new heart, I thought that was interesting.
We will definately hope for a different option as Nephi gets older. How scary to be not the first but among the first people to have these things done and be the "ginney pig" so to speak. We love Nephi and are blessed with whatever time we have with him.
